Nobody expected Rimpledeep Kaur to emerge as the winner but the tennis player from Jassowal defied all odds and defeated several seeded players en route to the women final and win the title in the national ranking Rs 2 lakh tennis tournament at the CLTA Complex,Sector 10,on Friday. Like on the previous occasions, she upset fourth seed Renu Sharma 6-2,6-4 in the final.

The odds were stacked against her when Rimpledeep stepped on the centre court in CLTA amid the raucous cheering from the local players. The stage was perfectly set for the 18-year-old to show that her entry into the final was no fluke. But against her,on the other side of the court, was Renu Sharma,a hard-hitting player known for her power-packed performances. The pressure, however, was all on Renu who was expected to tame Rimpledeep,a qualifier, and walk away with the title.

Rimpledeep took the pressure off her nerves by dominating in the first set. Making less unforced pressure and using her variations to break the rhythm of her hard-hitting opponent,Rimpledeep easily took the first set 6-2.

Given the way Renu easily conceded the first set,she was expected to perform better in the second set. Not only she consistently won points but also threatened to take the final match into the third set by winning the second. However,Rimpledeep bounced back, played some attacking shots from the baseline and effectively used top spins and drop shots to rack up points. With pressure piling on both the players,it was Rimpledeep who kept her nerves and played some good tennis to win the set 6-4 to win the title.

Ankit Sachdeva, another qualifier, however, failed to cause an upset when he lost to top seed and wild card entrant Kunal Anand 6-4,1-6,6-4. Kunal justified his top billing in the tournament by winning the first set 6-4. However, against him was Ankit who had played some top tennis in the tournament to oust a number of seeded players. He broke off from the shackles in the second set and played some unbelievable shots to race to a 4-1 lead. He continued to dominate and easily won the second set 6-1 and took the match into the decider. He put a stiff resistance but Kunal had the last laugh in the end by taking a 5-2 lead. Ankit, however, won the next two games in succession and made it 4-5 before Kunal kept his cool in the tenth game and won 6-4.
