THE SIT investigating the murder of senior journalist K J Singh and his mother Gurcharan Kaur on Thursday questioned their family members and two domestic staff who had worked with him until October 2016. The police also called on K J’s colleagues to assist in the investigation. K J and his mother were found murdered at their residence in Phase 3B2 on Saturday afternoon.

Thursday’s questioning at Mataur police station in Mohali took place immediately after the bhog ceremony for the mother and son. K J’s nephew Ajay Pal Singh, brother B P Singh and sister Yash Pal Kaur went to the police station after the ceremony about 3.30 pm. Another relative waited outside the police station for them.

While the brother and the two women left the police station after about an hour, nephew Ajay Pal remained at the station for longer, and it is unclear when he was allowed to go.

One family member said they were asked “routine questions”, and that they too asked a few questions of the police about the progress in the case.  “They have not been able to recover the car yet. They could not tell us the progress made in the case so far,” added a family member who wished not to be named.

The police asked them about domestic assistants who had worked with the family and details about people who used to meet the two murder victims frequently. “We have questioned K J’s family members and two of his former domestic helps today. We are working on various theories, but have not yet reached any conclusion,” Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal told Chandigarh Newsline.

Chandigarh Newsline was not able to ascertain when the domestic assistants were questioned and where. The SSP did not confirm that K J’s former colleagues were questioned, but said the police were asking them to assist in the investigation.

The police are also looking for a sister of K J, Paramjeet Kaur, who used to live in the same house with him and his mother until 2009, but has not been in touch with the family after leaving the house eight years ago.
