Accussing the state government of mortgaging properties to generate resources, Opposition parties in Punjab on Wednesday slammed the Akali-BJP combine’s fiscal management policies.
Aam Admi Party (AAP) Convenor Sucha Singh Chottepur said the government had borrowed Rs 2,100 crore through mortgaging state property.
“They have not even spared the heritage and historic Gandhi Varidha Ashram in Jalandhar, once visited by Mahatma Gandhi. It is currently home to about 160 widows,” Chottepur said.
Slamming Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, former state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa alleged that going by the present situation, “ the entire state would be mortgaged” before the 2017 elections. He called on the Badals “to replicate their family model of development as their business has grown exponentially since they assumed power”.
He also urged the Centre to declare financial emergency in this border state.
