The state may be on the verge of getting more libraries after the Public Library and Information Services Draft Committee under the chairmanship of the Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan has finally prepared a draft of the Shabad Parkash Punjab Public Library and Information Services Bill 2011.
The draft Bill,prepared by the committee and coordinated by the Punjab School Education Board Chairman Dalbir Singh Dhillon,contains details of the public library development plan and the budget estimates.
Sekhwan in a press meet on Sunday said an ordinance will be passed by the state government to put the Bill into effect before the enforcement of the election code. The project will require Rs 146 crore and will take 10 years to complete,the education minister added.
Sekhwan said under the legislation,the Punjab Public Library Governing Board,along with a Standing Library Committee will be established apart from a separate Directorate of Public Libraries. One state central library,22 district libraries,141 block libraries,157 town libraries and 12,282 village libraries will be established at different stages he said.
