A Deputy Superintendent of Police and a young woman were found murdered on Thursday at a farmhouse located on the outskirts of the city on Hambran Road.
The deceased police officer has been identified as Balraj Singh Gill, who was posted on election duty at Moga. The police are yet to establish the identity of the woman.
Police Commissioner Ishwar Chand Sharma said,The family of the police officer had reported to us that the DSP was missing since Wednesday evening, and that his mobile phone was switched off. Our search operation led us to this farmhouse.
According to the police, the DSP and the woman had been attacked by sharp edged weapons such as swords and knives. The killers had slashed Gills head a number of times. The neck of the police officer was found cut and the head dangling. The womans face had numerous slash marks. The police suspect the number of killers to be at least three.
It is learnt that Gill returned home on Wednesday and attended a function along with his family. Around 6 pm,he received a call on his mobile phone after which a white Chevrolet Optra car, which belonged to his friend Narinderpal Singh, arrived at the spot. The DSP sat in this car and left without informing his family as to where he was going. Neither did Gill take a bodyguard along with him nor was he carrying his official weapon,as per the police. Its learnt that Gill headed for the farmhouse owned by businessman Sanjay Agnihotri, who is an old friend. Sources said Gill was a frequent visitor to the farmhouse.
It seems Gill was being followed. The killers knew everything about his movement. The first attack took place some 20 yards from the gate. We have been told that there was no one inside the house and a gardener, who comes to tend lawn, had left at 4 pm. We found some broken plants and crushed grass at 20 yards. The second attack took place near the entry of the drawing room. After the second attack he seems to have lost consciousness. The attackers took him inside the drawing room, made him sit on the sofa, after which he was brutally killed, said Sharma.
The body of the young lady, aged between 25 and 30,was found in the bathroom next to the drawing room. Its learnt that the killers took away the jeans she was wearing.
Her mobile phone and purse were missing. The killers took away the car,Gills mobile phone and purse. The car was last seen in Noorpur Bet. We have sent five teams, each headed by an ACP,to investigate into the matter, added Sharma.
