Eighteen pilgrims were injured, seven of them critically, when their bus turned turtle while on the way to The Golden Temple in Amritsar from Patiala on Friday. The pilgrims were part of the CM Tirath Yatra Scheme.
The incident happened after the driver lost control close to an overbridge on the national highway. According to the police, the bus tumbled at least thrice before coming to a halt. The driver, Lakhwinder Singh who was also injured in the accident, said a truck tried to overtake the bus while negotiating a narrow road. He braked but lost control.
Injured pilgrims, however, told the police that the bus driver was reckless and did not heed their call to go slow. Police are investigating the claims.
