PU to mark 150th birthday of Prof Sahni tomorrow

“Prof Ruchi Ram Sahni,an illustrious alumnus of the PU,was a scientist,an innovator,an educationist,a devoted patriot,a social reformer and a literary luminary. The year-long celebrations are an effort to showcase all the greats of Punjab to the people of Punjab,” said the Panjab University (PU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Arun Kumar Grover,while he was giving a briefing about a programme starting from April 5 to honour Sahni,at the varsity campus. “The commemoration of 150 years of Prof Ruchi Ram Sahni is not person-specific but theme-specific,” Grover added.

While inaugurating a website detailing Prof Sahni’s achievements,photographs,lectures and related matter,Prof Grover said that the Union Government has agreed to release a stamp on Prof Sahni in October.

The V-C made the assurance that the stamp will be released on the varsity’s foundation day. Union Ministers for Telecom and Information and Technology Kapil Sibal and Manish Tewari are expected to be present on the day of the release of the stamp.

Grover also said that PM Manmohan Singh has confirmed that that he will be visiting the varsity any time this year. “The President might visit the campus in April. He has to come on the commemoration day but due to highest civilian award ceremony on April 5 at New Delhi,his visit got postponed,” he added.

The inaugural function will start at 10 am on April 5 at the PU auditorium. K K Sharma,Advisor to the UT Administrator,will grace the occasion as chief guest. Prof Ashok Sahni and Prof Jayant Narlikar will be the key speakers during the function.

Prof Ashok Sahni,grandson of Prof Ruchi Ram Sahni,former DUI and professor Emeritus,Department of Geology,PU will speak on ‘Grandfather: Leading Many Lives’. Eminent scientist Professor Jayant Narlikar will deliver a popular science lecture on ‘Strange Events In Our Solar System’.

During the press briefing,Dr Tankeshwar,Director,Computer Centre said that the Sector 14 campus was well on its way to being seamlessly wi-fi connected. The section from the Department of Geology to the University Guest House is already wi-fi enabled while the Pharmacy Department grid is under the process of installation.

Outdoor access points will also be provided. Students will be able to connect to the wi-fi network through the user names and passwords allocated to them. The internet connectivity has been provided to the university through the National Knowledge Network.
