Protest held over inaction on woman’s rape by constable

Hundreds of people protested on Wednesday,alleging police inaction in arresting a head constable of the Punjab Police involved in the rape of a 22-year old woman.

Hundreds of people protested on Wednesday,alleging police inaction in arresting a head constable of the Punjab Police involved in the rape of a 22-year old woman. Family members and close relatives of a woman,who is originally from Bartana area of Punjab,on Wednesday sat in protest.

The police official is one of the uncles of the woman.

Family members and residents of Bartana protested outside the office of the Director General of Police in Sector 6 and ended the protest only after they were assured of action by the senior police officials in the matter. Police have ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Close relatives and the family members of the woman said that the woman was married to a youth of Yamunanagar a year back.

However they pointed out that the woman’s father fell ill and is suffering from Tuberculosis (TB). She called up the husband of her aunt to accompany her to the parental home but instead of taking her there,he raped the woman.

The woman’s family members said that the incident of rape happened around 20 days back,but police have failed to take any action in the matter.

“The family had moved a complaint before the police some 20 days ago,but no action has been taken on it,” said an acquaintance of the family,Janak Singh. He added that the police is failing to take action as the person involved is also a police official.

“The girl was raped by the accused continuously for many days,” added Singh. He said that the person who is an accused in the case has two children and is a widower.
