Rajbir Singh Padiala, son of Akali MLAs from Kharar Bachittar Singh and Daljeet Kaur, announced to quit the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday.  Hundreds of his supporters also bid adieu to the party.

Padiala remained vice-president of the SAD but was currently holding no office .

Padiala, whose family was known as staunch supporters of slain Akali stalwart Gurcharan Singh Tohra, said he has been receiving offers from senior Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leaders to join them, but will formally announce his decision in a couple of days.

Padiala accused the SAD leadership of ignoring him and his family ever since his father was shot dead near Landran village in Kharar on December 1,1996.

Following the murder,Bachittar’s widow Daljeet Kaur was elected as SAD legislator from Kharar in 1997 with a record margin of over 50,000 votes.  She,later, switched over to the splintered faction of Akali stalwart Gurcharan Singh Tohra, who fielded Rajbeer from Kharar in the 2002 Punjab Assembly polls, which he lost.

When the Tohra and Badal factions reunited,Rajbeer staked claim for the SAD ticket in the 2007 assembly elections, but he was not accommodated.  For the ensuing Lok Sabha polls,he again applied for SAD ticket from Anandpur Sahib but in vain.

“I was not only denied the party ticket twice but was also not made Punjab Pollution Control Board chairman as promised by the party leadership before the 2007 polls,” claimed Padiala.
