The Chandigarh Police apprehended a truck smuggling Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) to Delhi,on Wednesday. The pick-up truck was seized by a PCR team with the help of Sector 31 police from a special naka near Tribune Chowk. The truck, bearing a Delhi registration number was being driven by Daya Chand,a resident of Gaziabad (UP).

During the checking 65 cartons of different types IMFL were recovered from the truck, hidden in a secret compartment. The liquor was being transported to Delhi without any permit or license.

Addressing a press conference,Deputy Superintendent of Police (PCR) Roshan Lal said,“The pick-up truck had been modified in such a way that a separate compartment had been made to hide liquor cases. The accused had also extended the rear portion of the truck so that the storage space appeared normal. The compartment which had a capacity to store 75 cartons, could only be opened,by turning a screw attached to the compartment door.”

He added that the rear portion was covered with the empty vegetable crates to mislead the police party. “We believe that such vehicles are being used to smuggle liquor to other states as well,” added the DSP. Meanwhile, the accused has been arrested and a case under the Excise Act has been registered at the Sector 31 Police station. In a separate case,15 cases of Country liquor were recovered from an auto-driver Prabhu Nath.
