The wait for slum dwellers to get houses under the rehabilitation scheme is likely to end soon. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to come to the city in September end or October first week to hand over the keys of the houses in Dhanas.

Officials of the Administration visited the site Tuesday and directions have been issued to ensure that the pending work is completed at the earliest. The PM was earlier expected to come to the city in April this year. However, the visit did not materialise.

The construction of more than 8,000 one-room tenements in Dhanas was completed almost a year ago. However, the supporting infrastructure was not ready. Roads had not been constructed, neither were electricity connections provided.

A total of 8,448 one-room tenements have been constructed in Dhanas for slum dwellers with funds from Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission by Chandigarh Housing Board. Some of the houses would be allotted for facilities like school,PDS,etc. A list of the beneficiaries is being prepared by the Estate Office.

It is expected that the land where Colony Number 5 is present would get vacated as the slum dwellers would be shifted here. People from some other colonies would also be shifted.

Earlier, the BJP had started a campaign going to different colonies and asking people not to accept the tenements and instead raised a demand for two-room flats.
