The PGIMER authorities are likely to make 22 private rooms of the Advance Trauma Centre (ATC) functional for the public from next month.

These rooms have been closed for the past four years since the trauma centre of the hospital had started.

Sources in the PGI said the 22 rooms of the 100-bedded trauma centre are likely to open from next month and orders to purchase the required things for these rooms have been placed recently. “It was decided few months ago that these rooms should be started. However, we couldn’t do it then owing to shortage of employees,” said a senior PGI official.

The official added, “But, now around 20 staff members will be there for these rooms. We have already given orders to purchase television and other things for the rooms.”

A source said the PGI director has recently asked the administration to open the rooms sooner. The officials said anybody can apply for these rooms. “The charges will be same as fixed by the administration for the private rooms at the hospital,” said an official.

According to the doctors, these rooms would provide a sigh of relief for the public, as the trauma centre of the PGI is already witnessing a huge rush.

“Patients are facing inconvenience because of the rush,” said a doctor posted at the trauma centre. “Once these rooms would be made operational, it will help the public in getting extra care.”

The PGI’s trauma centre, according to the doctors, has witnessed an increase of patients compared to the last year.

“There is a increase of 10 per cent patients as compared to the last year,” said a senior doctor. “So far the trauma centre has recorded admissions of around 10,000 patients.”
