Residents in several sectors had to sweat it out due to outages after peak power demand touched 400 megawatt (MW) on Friday afternoon, breaking all previous records.
The city’s electricity infrastructure has the maximum load capacity of 400MW.
The supply remained disrupted in different sectors from one to five hours. According to officials of the electricity department, parts of sectors 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 30, 34, 35, 42, 44 and 45 were among the affected areas.

The maximum power load of 400MW was recorded at 3:15 pm. The previous peak record was registered on July 11, 2014, when consumption had touched 395 MW. The officials of the department attributed the rise in power demand to extensive use of air conditioners.
Department overdrew to meet demand
To meet the demand of 400MW, the electricity department overdrew from grid and had to procure un-requisitioned surplus power from different stations.
The department has power purchase agreement (PPA) of 247MW. To meet the shortfall, un-requisitioned surplus power was purchased from power plants in Dadri (21 MW), Jhajjar (30 MW), Unchahar-I (23) and Unchahar-II (36), and it overdrew 43MW from grid in Delhi.
resent, the power load of Chandigarh is fed from Kishangarh-based 3×100 MVA power transformers, Mohali’s 2×80 MVA and 66-kV line from Dhulkote.
The electricity department does not have its own power generation source and buys its power through its allocation from central generating stations (CGS): the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) and Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Ltd (THDC).
As per the official records, at present, there is one 220KV sub-station, 13 66KV sub-stations and five 33KV sub-stations in the city. Each sub-station has a life span of 25 years and around six 66KV sub-stations have completed the life span.
For the financial years of 2017-2018 and 2018-2019, the peak demand has been projected to be 450MW and 475MW respectively by the department. There are nearly 2.5 lakh consumers in different categories. Of them, 1.75 lakh fall in the domestic category.
Despite repeated attempts, UT superintending engineer M P Singh was not available for comment.
