The seven-day wait of the family of Col (Retd) M S Brar ended on Thursday after his body was brought home. Col (Retd) M S Brar, 48, a resident of Sector 20, Panchkula, was one of the two pilots on the Pawan Hans helicopter that went missing on August 4, during a flight to Dibrugarh, Assam. Col Brar had opted for premature retirement from the Army Aviation Corps in 2010.

“If the ENT (Emergency Locator Transmitter) in the helicopter had been working properly, probably, some lives including that of my son, could have been saved. Things could have been different,” claimed Brar’s father Air Commodore (Retd) G S Brar, who also held the position of AOC 12 Wing Chandigarh from June 1989 to June 1991.

The ELT installed in helicopters and other aircraft helps in the detection and location of the aircraft and people in distress in case of a crash. According to experts, it sends signals that are transmitted via satellite to the international monitoring site and help in detecting the location of the aircraft, which is crucial for rescue operations within 24 hours of the accident.

“The poor maintenance of ENT in Pawan Hans helicopters has been highlighted so many times, before, but to no avail,” said G S Brar. Expressing his gratitude to the Army and Indian Air Force teams that remained on duty to locate the crash site and put in tremendous effort to recover the bodies despite bad weather conditions, he said the defence forces have done all that they could, but he expected more efforts from Pawan Hans.

“My son was their (Pawan Hans) pilot. They should have done an air recee.”

The body was brought by road from Delhi and will be kept in PGI, Chandigarh. The last rites would be performed at Cremation Ground, Manimajra at 11 am on Friday, the family said.
