If you have a bedridden patient at home and are worried about possible bedsores, you do not need to worry. For,expert help is available right at your doorstep.
PGIMER,as part of an Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR)-Department of Science and Technology (DST) project Care for the Bedridden, has already enrolled 70 patients from the Tricity for it over the past one year. With PGI teams regularly visiting the bedridden patients at their homes to teach their family members how to take care of these patients and avoid bed sores, none of these patients have developed bedsores so far.
Says Professor Amarjeet Singh of the School of Public Health,PGIMER,Wonderful results have been seen with the use of fresh human placental extract and human derived platelet gel. Another dressing regime,ie Hydrocolloid dressing that is being provided in the project, has shown excellent results in the healing of bedsores. Neosporin ointment is another dressing regime to which patients are responding really well.
Interestingly, the most common underlying diagnosis in these bedridden cases has been found to be neurological, adds Dr Singh. A 62-year-old patient from Mohali, who was completely unconscious and bedridden after he was severely injured in a road accident, had developed grade 3 and 4 bedsores .He was attended by the project team and has shown miraculous recovery by getting back on his feet after complete healing of the bedsores.
Dr Sukhpal Kaur,Lecturer with the Department of NINE,PGI,said that many have shown drastic improvement and become fully independent in performing their daily activities like standing, walking, moving from bed to chair, etc which they were not able to do earlier.
