High drama was witnessed in front of the Gynaecology Department of the Government Multi Specialty Hospital,Sector 16,and the police was called. The parents claimed that that their child was born alive but died later due to a doctor’s negligence. However, the doctor contradicts their version, saying that the baby was stillborn.

Aarif, father of the infant, said,“My wife Parveen was undergoing treatment at this hospital. On June 24,a doctor referred her to Sector 22 clinic for ultrasound. The clinic people said that our baby is very weak and is underweight. But the next day, when we showed the report to the doctor, she told us that our baby is dead.”

The ultrasound report dated June 24 states that a single dead foetus is seen inside the uterine cavity at the time of the scan and there are no cardiac or foetal movements.

But the parents, being illiterate, could not read the report and were wrongly informed about the status of the child by the laboratory personnel.

Aarif says,“On June 25,I admitted my wife at GMSH-16,where doctors said that the baby is no more. But my wife kept on saying that she can feel the movements of the child. Today morning she delivered the baby,it was a normal delivery.”

He said that after delivery, the doctors did not even show them the face of the child and gave them a packed body.

Aarif’s sister said,“When I opened the packet to see the face of the baby,he breathed. He opened his mouth and took a breath.”

She added,“We rushed him to the doctors and requested them to re-examine the baby. But the doctor on duty used very harsh words and shooed us out of the ward, without even checking the baby.”

“Is this a way to treat a family who has just lost their child? They just threw us out, without listening to our problems,” the sister said.

The police was called and complaint was also filed, but later the family members took back the case. The father refused to allow a postmortem examination of the child.

When Newsline tried to talk to the doctor, she refused to comment.

Dr Rajiv Vadera,Medical Superintendent,GMSH-16 said,“Ultrasound reports clearly state the dead status of the foetus. The parents were informed a day before that the baby is no more and today they were handed over the baby. However, the parents returned to the child specialist, saying that the baby is alive, but the doctor confirmed that he is no more.”

“The parents have not filed any written complaint. They could have send the child’s body for postmortem,to clarify their doubts,” Vadehra added.

When asked about the harsh behaviour of the doctors present at the Gynaecology Department,he said,“Nobody from the family came to me with a complaint. I would have definitely looked into the matter,if the members had approached me.”
