It is widely referred to as “the world’s best medicine”,and stand-up comedian Papa CJ wants to make sure everyone is administered generous doses of it. While his acts of comedy have left audiences in fits of laughter,CJ now wants to move from the “business of comedy” to the “business of happiness” starting with hospitals. “Hospitals are serious places, with grey walls and white corridors. Stress levels are high here and everyone could do with a bit of cheer,” says CJ,who is all set to perform at hospitals across the country at no charge. Except for travel expenses and arrangement for boarding and lodging,CJ says he will conduct the shows free of cost. “Laughter de-stresses the mind and body. If I can make the patients forget their pain and help in a speedy recovery, then why not?” says CJ. An incident in Kolkata last year got the the comedian seriously thinking on this plan. “An 86-year-old told me that she hadn’t laughed this hard in 30 years. I was moved and decided to spread more laughter for the ones who need it,” reminisces the comic artist.

He understands that hospitals have different types of patients across age groups, who are from different educational, religious and economic backgrounds. Since CJ’s acts are primarily in English,he is aware that his performances will be limited. So,to tackle this,he set up The Papa CJ Comedy Company about three months ago. It is an umbrella company that takes under its wing budding stand-up comedians. “I shall be using their services too. For instance,if the hospital wants an act in Hindi,we can send our teammate accordingly,” says CJ.

The Company has artistes as young as 15 years to those in their 40s with CJ playing mentor and guide. “I want the business of comedy to be taken seriously. In the process,I give space and platform to new talent to establish their own brands,” says CJ,as he adds how at weddings to corporate events, birthdays and even baby showers, demand for stand- up comic acts is on a rise.
