The District Consumer Disputes has held a manufacturer of electronics and consumer goods guilty of deficiency in services for selling a defective compressor of air conditioner and directed it to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 to a complainant. Avtar Singh Kohli (81), a resident of Silver City, had purchased a new 1.5 ton Samsung Window AC from Samsung Digital All Home in Sector 8-C, Chandigarh, for Rs 18,490 in July 2007. At the time of purchase, it was disclosed that the warranty for the compressor is for five years.
In July 2015, the AC suddenly stopped working and Kohli contacted Smart Solutions, the authorised Samsung Service Centre in Phase 2, Panchkula, which said the compressor had stopped working and needs replacement.
Thereafter, the engineer told him that the warranty period for the compressor was over and he has to bear all the costs for the new compressor, which was of Rs 10,256.
But after only nine months, the new compressor stopped working. Kohli alleged that probably inferior quality compressor was installed with a warranty of three months only.
“The original AC compressor lasted for eight years. The new one lasted for nine months only, out of which it was not used for 6 ½ months, because of the winter season,” he said.
Despite several complaints, no help was provided by the company stating that period of the new compressor was only for three months.
