While the UT Education Department has specified January 31 as last date for receiving applications for 25 per cent seats reserved under the Right to Education (RTE) Act 2009 for children from the economically weaker sections of society, only 700 applications have so far been received against a total of about 3,000 reserved seats.

With schools reiterating a shortage in the number of takers for RTE seats in the 1-km neighbourhood, the Department instructed all schools to receive applications from eligible candidates from across the city. The Independent Schools Association has objected to this.

“When RTE clearly mandates that we have to admit candidates living in the neighbourhood, how can the Education Department ask us to allow admission to anyone?” said ISA President H S Mamik.

UT officials,on the other hand, stated that the guideline has been amended after due consideration of provisions of the act.
