Busy in treating patients, they often tend to be casual about their own health. As Doctor’s day was celebrated across the city on Monday, doctors at PGIMER spoke on their lifestyle and health issues.

“Doctors believe that their immune system is very strong,so they tend to ignore their health. It is only, when problem becomes serious, that they start taking medicines. Though I am suffering from an allergy from many days, but I have not taken any medicine and am ignoring my health for long,” shares Dr Shiv Lal Soni, president,Association of Resident Doctors,PGI.

Talking about the psychological problems, which doctors have to face,Dr Adarsh Kohli,Clinical Psychologist said: “The life of a doctor in a PGIMER is very hectic, especially those who are doing MD and MS,as they have to work as well as meet the deadlines of assignments in their academic career. Most of them suffers form anxiety and mental stress.” She added that the counselling system is not very effective due to lack of trust among doctors. “The bond between junior and senior doctors should be strengthened and for that seniors should have to act more responsibly,” she said.

Dr Soni agreeing with the Psychologist said: “The number of doctors per patients is very less,as a result pressure on doctors increases. Our work starts from 7 am and lasts for 12-24 hours depending upon the number of emergency cases. We usually do not have time to eat,we rely on tea and snacks most of the times.”

Dr Adarsh raised another important point of sleep disorder among doctors, which is very common because of the uneven working hours and excessive pressure. Further, she said that doctors do not have any time for entertainment: “They do not go out for movies, they do not play sports. They hardly go out of the premises of PGIMER. It is not at all healthy for a doctor.”
