Civil Society Group Aaawaz in association with Gopal Dham Gaushala Hindu Mahasabha, and others, today announced to launch a nationwide movement ‘Gau bachao andolan’ in February to create awareness through public meetings for the status of cows in India and to recommend a law against cow slaughter.

Swami Gopal Mani, who is spearheading the movement across India, said the country where the sacred animal was looked upon as a ‘mother figure’ was going to be the world’s largest beef exporter in 2012 with 1.4 million tonnes of meat exported to distant shores. He added that if there was a proposal to revoke the ‘beef export ban’ by the government, then they would oppose it for the danger that it might lead to mass cow slaughter.

Representatives of various NGOs demanded that the government allocate land for construction of cow shelters as cows were wandering on roads and eating rubbish. They (NGOs) proposed the establishment of a ‘cow memorial’,the construction of which they claim, had been approved by Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. According to them,in the last five months, they had rescued 10,000 cows through ‘Hindu Helpline’,where anyone can call regarding cow exploitation.
