The news of Dr Atul Sachdev having been selected as the new director of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH),Sector-32 has created a buzz in the hospital since Wednesday morning. This is despite the fact that the official letter from the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has yet to be received.

Sachdev is MD,DM (Gastroenterology),MAMS and a professor and head of the Department of General Medicine,GMCH-32. He pursued his MD,DM in medicine and gastroenterology from PGIMER and has been on the faculty of General Medicine in the GMCH-32 from 1993. He has been awarded the membership of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. He is the founder member and secretary of the Gastrointestinal Infection Society of India. He has several national and international publications to his credit.

While talking to Newsline about his journey in the hospital as a faculty member,he said,“I joined the hospital in September 1993,and it has been more than 19 years since then. My experience so far with the hospital has been wonderful. I have seen the hospital grow. Because when I joined there was nothing,we never had a hospital,we started from a Sector 22 poly clinic, but now it is one of the top institutions of the country.”

Sachdev said,“The selection was a very pleasant surprise,as I was not expecting it. I just got to know from the newspapers that I have been selected. I am still waiting for an official letter from the UPSC. It is a big responsibility and a very challenging job,and I hope to fulfill my responsibilities to the best of my capacity.”

When asked who he thought was a tough contender for the post,he said,“I never thought about who will be selected. All 13 doctors who appeared for the interview were capable of the post and good contenders. Since the interview was a selection not by seniority, everybody had a chance.”

The new director has a vision of producing quality doctors from the institute and providing good medical services to the patients. “Two things are very important for any institution to succeed – one is to produce quality students. The second is that we must provide good patient care. Which means we should be the best in both,” Sachdev said.

The outgoing director,Dr Raj Bahadur, while congratulating and welcoming his successor, said,“He is among those people who are very close to me. He is a refined, moderated and sophisticated person. By virtue of his style and moderation,I am sure that he will take the institute ahead.”

As a director, there will be two important challenges in front of him – one is the issue of contractual employees and second is the appointment of super-specialists in various departments.
