Mishap near airport light point; 1 dead

A 38-year-old Zirakpur resident was killed in an accident on Tuesday afternoon.

A 38-year-old Zirakpur resident was killed in an accident on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased,identified as Vikas Sawhney,was coming from Zirakpur on his scooter when it collided with a truck near Airport Light Point.

The deceased ran a printing press in Makkan Majra village. This was the 19th death that had taken place in city roads accidents this year. According to the police,Vikas was coming from Zirakpur when the accident took place. He was reported to be wearing a helmet.

“When Vikas reached the Airport light point,a truck which was slightly ahead but running parallel to him suddenly made a U turn. Vikas was seriously injured as his scooter rammed into the front wheel of the truck,” said the investigating officer (IO),Sub-Inspector Raghubir Singh.

A police vehicle rushed him to Government Medical College and Hospital,Sector 32 (GMCH-32),where he was declared ‘dead on arrival’. The truck driver Manish Yadav was arrested from the spot and the truck has been impounded. The deceased was married around two years ago and is survived by his wife,parents and brother. His family has been informed about the accident.

A case has been registered at the Sector 31 police station.

3-yr-old’s death: Driver arrested

Chandigarh: The police on Tuesday arrested Sandeep Singh (28),a resident of Sector 70,Mohali,on charges of culpable homicide in a hit-and-run case in which three-year-old girl Gehna was killed in Sector 38 on Monday. The arrest was made on the basis of his car’s registration number,which had been noted down by an eyewitness. Sandeep had returned from Australia four months ago after spending three years there.
