The Municipal Corporation on Friday canceled the agenda items of the Electricity Committee passed in a meeting held on Thursday. The cancellation was done after it was discovered that the quorum of the meeting was not complete. These agenda items will now be taken up in the next meeting of the committee.
The meeting of the committee was scheduled to be held on Thursday under the chairmanship of BJP councillor Arun Sood. The BJP and Congress councillors are trading allegations over the attendance at the meeting.
Sood says that there were four members including him present at the meeting. One third of the members are required to be present for the quorum to be complete. In case the quorum for the meetings of the sub-committees is fifty per cent,as claimed by the Congress, then the agenda items could be canceled, he says.
Sood alleged that the Congress councillors decided to boycott the meeting so that the agenda items are not passed as the committee is headed by a BJP councillor. The Congress was against development in the city,he added. Agenda items worth lakhs were to be passed during the meeting, including installation of lights in parks, upgradation of streetlights, etc.
Congress councillor Subhash Chawla, meanwhile said that the Congress had no plans of boycotting the meeting,it was by chance that none of the Congress councillors were present. He said that since the quorum was not complete the agenda items could not have been passed. We are not against development work. However,a proper procedure needs to be followed, he said.
Deputy Mayor Satish Kainth demanded that Sood should resign from the chairmanship of the electricity committee owning responsibility of passing agenda items without following proper rules.
