Harassed commuters on the Chandigarh-Panchkula route have reasons to be optimistic as work on the rail underbridge (RUB),at the railway crossing near Mauli Jagran,is likely to be completed by September this year. Once the underbridge is operational,it will provide an additional route between Chandigarh and Panchkula.
A Railways official said work was progressing fast and is expected to be completed by September. Authorities have turned to the latest technology to help expedite work with prefabricated concrete structures being pushed beneath the tracks with the help of hydraulic jacks. This ensures that plying of trains is not disrupted while work is on.
The construction of the RUB began in November last year – with the Railways and UT Administration sharing the costs. The project had been in the pipeline for years before it finally got the green signal.
Once completed,it will connect Mauli Jagran with Industrial Area and Hallomajra. This will be a boon for those who travel between Chandigarh and Panchkula. At present, one route, between the two cities, witnesses a lot of traffic, particularly during office and school hours while another is affected by the railway crossing at Manimajra.
The road leading to the crossing at Mauli Jagran had earlier been widened but it did nothing to smoothen traffic flow and thus most motorists gave it a miss. The under-construction RUB,however, should change that.
As for the railway crossing at Manimajra, there was a proposal to construct a RUB here as well but it did not get an official nod. An inspection found that shops and residential sites are too close to the proposed site, which may affect their foundations. Authorities are now exploring the option of expanding the crossing as opposed to constructing an underbridge.
