Match fixing: 1 arrested for duping people

The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police on Wednesday arrested a person for allegedly duping people on the pretext of doubling their money.

The Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police on Wednesday arrested a person for allegedly duping people on the pretext of doubling their money by placing bets on the fourth ODI cricket match that was being played between India and Australia at Ranchi on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Mintoo Mathwan,a resident of Bapu Dham Colony,Sector 26. Police said,the accused used to allure people by sending them text messages and making calls on their mobile phones,asking them to place a bet in the match. Police suspects the accused called people who are already involved in the betting business.

Acting on a tip-off,crime branch laid a trap and sent an official dressed in civil clothes,with Rs 1,000 on the pretext of taking part in the betting.

The team apprehended the accused Mintoo while he was accepting the money and handing over a receipt to the crime branch official,making him eligible to participate in the bet.

During searches,four cellphones,Rs 10,500 and a note-book in which the accused maintaining his gambling record were recovered from his possession.

A case has been registered against the accused under Section 420 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 13-A/3/67 of Gambling Act with the Sector 26 police. Police on Thursday received two-days custody of the accused.
