The police on Friday arrested a man for impersonating a bank staffer and duping people withdrawing money from ATMs across Rajpura,Panchkula,Dera Bassi and Ambala. Rajinder Kumar would allegedly offer help to people experiencing problems with their ATM cards.

“He would sit in ATMs with no security guards and tell customers that he had been deployed to help them. After knowing their passwords,he would withdraw money,” said CIA in-charge Bikramjit Brar.

Kumar was arrested after a head constable with the Chandigarh Police reported about an unidentified man offering to help people outside a State Bank of Patiala ATM near Dera Bassi. He told the police that the man withdrew money for him as well. “When I returned home,I discovered that the ATM card returned to me was not mine and Rs 35,000 had been withdrawn from my account,” he told the Rajpura police.

“When we traced the owner of the other ATM ,he also complained that he had lost Rs 40,000 from his account in a similar manner. Gulzar Singh, sarpanch of Dhanoli village, lost his entire money in a similar manner,” added Brar. A case under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC has been registered against Kumar.
