As the race for tickets in the Chandigarh unit of Congress has ensued, the local leaders are holding meetings with senior party leaders who were earlier in the city. The names of these senior leaders have been doing the rounds for being named as the candidate from the city.
The local leaders have held meetings with Union minister Manish Tewari and senior Congress leader in Haryana Venod Sharma. From asking for support to discussing the future strategies, the local leaders are making attempts to strengthen their position.
Both Tewari and Sharma were strong contenders in the Chandigarh unit of the Congress.
Till 1999, the names of these two, along with Pawan Kumar Bansal, used to be sent to the party high command for consideration when it came to ticket for Chandigarh. However, as Bansal won three consecutive elections, his clout in the city unit kept increasing. Eventually, Tewari was fielded from Ludhiana constituency and Sharma from Ambala.
As the rail bribery scam broke out, the names of these leaders once again started doing the rounds as possible contenders for the ticket from Chandigarh.
Several leaders from the city including Bhupinder Singh Badheri, Vijay Rana, H S Lucky and Devinder Singh Babla have held meetings with Venod Sharma. Badheri says that he sought Sharma’s support prior to giving his application for the candidature. Meanwhile, Lucky also held a meeting with Manish Tewari during his visit to the city on Monday.
Both Tewari and Sharma reportedly enjoy support in different sections in the city.
Talking to incharge of Chandigarh unit Shakeel Ahmed, the members of District Congress Committee (Urban) I had demanded that the ticket from the city be given to anyone except Pawan Bansal. Apart from several names from the city unit, he had named these two leaders as well.
