The proposal of the UT Administration to send the draft of the Masterplan to experts in New Delhi for approval has earned the ire of city-based architects. The architects claim that there are many experts in the city who will be able to ascertain the requirements of the city better.
The work on making the Masterplan started more than two years ago. After several rounds of meetings, the draft has now been prepared. It entails vision for the city for the next 20 years. However, for approval it is being sent to experts in Delhi. This is being opposed by local architects.
Surinder Bahga, nominated councillor and architect said,Whenever the draft of a Masterplan is made,it is first made public. The opinion of the stakeholders is sought to ensure that their needs are met. This has not been done and the people of the city have not been shown the Masterplan. There are many experts in the city, some of whom were connected with the creation of the city. Their opinion should have been sought on the Masterplan.
Since the inception of the Masterplan committee, some members opted out of it,while others did not attend many meetings. The members were torn between retaining the original character of the city and adapting to the changing needs.
Another architect Archana Chaudhary said that experts in the city should be consulted instead of asking experts from outside to comment on the Masterplan. She added,People of the city know the needs of the city better than outsiders. Their opinion needs to be considered.
