A lioness died in Chhatbir Zoological Park on Sunday. Zoo officials said the 20-year-old big cat died due to sunstroke and paralysis due to which its health was deteriorating since last month.

The body of the lioness, except its neck and a leg,was paralysed in May. Since then it was on medication and being given glucose.

Officials said the lioness was being observed round-the-clock by doctors and zoo-keepers. In the afternoon on Sunday, the lioness died.

After postmortem, its body was cremated in the evening.

Now,only one pair of lions is left in the famous Lion Safari.

The safari, which used to be the main attraction of the zoo,had around a dozen Asian and African lions when it was started in the early eighties.

By 2001,the number had reached over hundred. But soon after that, the cubs started dying after developing diseases. Four months ago,a lion had died due to old age, leaving one lion and two lionesses. This has led to a fall in the number of tourists to the lion safari and is also affecting the number of visitors to the zoo,an official said.
