Karan bowls Punjab to win

Bowling a controlled line and length,spinner Karan Kaila (5 for 20) guided hosts Punjab to a comprehensive six-wicket win over Haryana in a match of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy for U-19 Cricket Tournament played at PCA Stadium,Mohali on Friday.

Bowling a controlled line and length,spinner Karan Kaila (5 for 20) guided hosts Punjab to a comprehensive six-wicket win over Haryana in a match of the Vinoo Mankad Trophy for U-19 Cricket Tournament played at PCA Stadium,Mohali on Friday.

After Haryana skipper Sachin Sidhu won the toss and elected to bat first,Punjab bowlers put the Haryana batsman on a tight rope. Mehjot Sodhi wrecked the Haryana top order and sent back their three premier batsmen. Kaila then weaved a web around the Haryana batsmen. The lanky spinner came to bowl when Haryana were down at 74 for 5 and claimed the remanning five wickets.

The first wicket to fall to Kaila was Vishal Kalkal who gave a simple catch to Mehjot Sodhi at an individual score of ten runs. Kaila then removed Lovkesh Kumar and then dismissed Mohit Mann. Haryana could post a total of 132 in 46.4 overs. For Punjab,Karan Kaila claimed five wickets for 20 runs while Mehjot Sodhi took three wickets for 30 runs.

Chasing an easy target of 133 runs,Punjab made a cautious start as openers Jaskaranvir Singh and Rohan Marwaha added 24 runs for the first wicket before Marwaha departed after playing a knock of 12 runs. Punjab then lost two quick wickets in the form of Maninder Singh (0) and Bhupinder Singh (0) with the scoreboard reading 35 for 3 in eight overs.

Jaskaranvir Singh and Simranpreet Singh then added 85 runs for the fourth wicket before Jaskaranvir departed after playing a knock of 54 runs off 72 balls. Simranpreet Singh and skipper Mohit Handa then took the hosts to the winning total. For Haryana,Shiva Yadav claimed two wickets for 21 runs. With this win,Punjab got five points including a bonus.

HP beat JKCA

In the second match of the day played at GMSSS-26,Himachal Pradesh registered a five-wicket win over JKCA to gather four points. Batting first,JKCA posted a total of 226 runs in 49.4 overs.

Paras Sharma was the top scorer for the team with 92 runs. For Himachal Pradesh,Mohammed Arjudeen claimed four wickets for 67 runs while Ankush Dhariwal bagged two wickets for 36 runs.

In reply,Himachal Pradesh reached the target for the loss of five wickets in 44.2 overs. Ankush Dhariwal was the star of the day for the Himachal team as he struck 98 runs off 114 balls. Nakulraj Sharma contributed 35 runs. For JKCA,Umar Nazir claimed two wickets for 51 runs. JKCA could not collect a single point in the match.

Punjab in command

Patiala : A swashbuckling century by skipper Taruwar Kohli (149 no) putPunjab into a strong position against Himachal Pradesh on the opening day of the match in the Col. CK Nayadu trophy being played at Dhruv Pandove Stadium,Patiala. Punjab had a shaky start as they lost opener Simrat Bawa in the first over of their innings.

Skipper Taruwar Kohli then joined Ravi Inder Singh at the crease and the duo added 87 runs for the second wicket before Ravi Inder departed. Kohli and Gurkirat Walia then added 197 runs for the third wicket with Kohli being the dominant partner. Kohli smashed 22 boundaries and three towering sixes during his unbeaten stay at the crease. At the end of the day,Punjab were 284 for 2 in 90 overs.
