Giving a clean chit to Punjab MLA Charanjit Singh Channi in the murder of 24-year-old Hoshiarpur girl Jyoti Kumari, police on Sunday said they couldnt find his involvement in the murder.
Apart from a visiting card of Doon MLA from Himachal Pradesh,Ram Kumar Chaudhary, police had also recovered a visiting card of the Punjab MLA from the bag of Jyoti Kumari. Channi is the MLA from Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar district.
Investigating Officer and Assistant Commissioner of Police Virendar Singh said the involvement of Punjab MLA couldnt be ascertained in the case. We have attached the visiting card with the challan that has been submitted to the court. The MLA,however,is not involved in the case. It is only by chance that the card was found with Jyoti Kumari.
Police said while the visiting card of the Doon MLA led to the suspicion of his involvement in the case, this was corroborated later by the other evidence against him. Not only did the MLA take SIM cards on fake identities but he had also accompanied the girl to the Jindal nursing home to abort her baby. Also, his handwriting has matched with the nursing home records and the location of his cell phone was traced to the same area where the girl was found murdered on November 21, said a police officer.
The ACP,however, said during investigation it couldnt be ascertained how the girl possessed the Punjab MLAs card. The MLA has told the police that he has no idea as to how his card was with the girl.
The police ruled out that the girl had tried to pressure the Doon MLA to give her a political role. Singh said the girl had been pressing the Doon MLA to only continue the relationship and this continued even after her baby was aborted at the Jindal nursing home.
As per the police chargesheet, the Doon MLA developed physical relations with the girl and she had introduced herself as an insurance agent to him in 2010. Subsequently,Chaudhary would often come to Chandigarh and developed physical relations with the girl. Initially,Chaudhary gave her Rs 7,000 and had subsequently transferred nearly Rs 1.25 lakh into her ICICI bank account in Sector 11 in the city from Baddi.
