Demonstrating against the Central government’s excise policy,a group of jewellers burnt an effigy of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee at Housing Board light point in Manimajra on Wednesday, leading to huge traffic chaos around 4.30 pm. With as many as 50 jewellers and craftsmen protesting, the roads remained blocked for about one hour.

All the gold, diamond and silver jewellery houses across the country have been closed since March 16 on account of a nationwide call given by the All India Gems and Jewellery Trade Federation.

The federation is demanding a rollback of new provisions in the budget which, according to the jewellers, will have a negative impact on the sector.

“The Finance Minister is yet to respond to our demands. Due to extensive pressure from grassroots-level jewellers from across the country, the federation decided to extend the strike,” said Rakesh Talwar, regional chairman of GJF.
