Police on Wednesday busted a gang that used to rob people by giving them lifts and later looting them of cash and jewellery. The gang was involved in incidents of robbery in Uttrakhand,Punjab,Haryana and Rajasthan. They have confessed to their involvement in at least six crime incidents in Ambala.
Police said the tribal gang headed by a women was busted when they were carrying out a robbery near Ambala. Some six cases of robbery have been attributed to the gang and police is investigating their involvement in other crime incidents in Panchkula and Chandigarh.
Police arrested five members of the gang and they have been identified as Sindro,45,Silo,and Charno,all residents of Sangrur area of Punjab and two male members,Uma Kant and Narender Singh residents of Ram Nagar area of Sangrur. Police said that they were part of an organised ex-criminal tribal racket which operates from Sangrur. Hunt is on for other accused.
A Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA) team worked on a specific information that the gang was planning loot and arrested all the five members. The gang has confessed to incidents of robbery,even as senior police officers said that their involvement in the criminal activities is much bigger. Commissioner Panchkula-Ambala range,Rajbir Deswal,said that the gang has recently struck at Dehradun and has been active since May this year. We are investigating now their role in other criminal incidents in Chandigarh and Panchkula, he said.
Police have recovered a knife,one sword,iron rods and a vehicle from their possession. Most of the cases they have confessed are from rural parts of Ambala district,police said.
During investigation some of the cases that have been solved after the arrest of the gang include an incident of loot in Mullana where a 60-year-old woman was looted of her 4 gold bangles. On 11 May this year,the gang committed another loot in Mahesh Nagar area in which a woman Sakuntala was robbed of her 2 gold bangles.
Also on May 21,a Ram Murti resident of Churiayala was targeted and her gold earrings were looted. On August 6,another woman was targeted by the gang. The gang offered her lift from bus stand Kalpi and her gold earrings were looted. On August 7,Dayal Kaur,of village Basantpura was robbed of her gold earrings,chain,bangles and Rs 8,000 cash. Deswal said that the gang mostly targeted women.
