The war of words between the BJP and three of its suspended members of the Panchkula Municipal Corporation (PMC) intensified on Tuesday, with the party stating that its internal probe found them to have voted for the Congress candidate in the elections held for the office of Mayor earlier this month,in violation of the whip issued by it asking them to abstain from voting. The suspended members, however, hit back at the party, saying that it was the party which had asked them to vote for the candidate of its choice,S S Nanda, who was also from the Congress party.

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday,BJP State President Ram Bilas Sharma said that the party has taken action against the suspended members who have also been told to reply to its showcause notice within a time period of 15 days. However, the party’s district president,Vishal Seth, who the members alleged asked them to vote for Nanda, said that an internal probe by the party found the three members guilty of voting for the Congress candidate and they have been asked to reply to this.

“A two-member committee comprising of the state general secretary,Manish Grover, and the state convenor of Local Bodies Cell,Sanjay Bhatia, found in the inquiry that the three members voted for Congress candidate during the elections,” he said.

However, the members contended that they voted for the Congress candidate as they found that Nanda was not in the race. They alleged that Seth made a deal with INLD on the candidature of Nanda for the Mayor’s post. However Seth strongly denied the charges. “The members are lying after the party acted tough against them,” he said.

On July 5,Congress supported independent candidate,Upinder Ahluwalia, was elected the Mayor of PMC after she defeated another Congress-supported independent candidate,Krishan Lamba,by a margin of four votes. Ahluwalia bagged 12 votes in the elections in which BJP and INLD candidates also voted for the Congress supported candidate.

BJP has also suspended C B Goel,Sunil Talwar and Ravikant Swami. Goel said that it was the party only which had been putting pressure on them to vote for the Congress-supported candidate and earlier it tried to influence them to vote for Ahluwalia. He said that the party should remove Seth instead of them and said that the top leadership was also responsible for the vote going in favour of Congress party.

BJP state president,Ram Bilas Sharma,on Tuesday alleged that the state government led by Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda was one of the weakest governments. He said that the government is embroiled in all sorts of scams and has illegally recuited a large number of teachers in violation of norms. He said that prime land has also been transferred to a company managed by the son-in-law of Sonia Gandhi,Robert Vadra, and sought a probe into it. He also alleged that the food security ordinance of the UPA government at the Centre was only a poll plank, adding that the Congress government was not serious for the welfare of poor and could not disburse ration to the poor, which rot in large quantities,in the wake of lack of storage facilities.
