On a foggy afternoon, this VVIP constituency looks sleepy, and a group of villagers sitting together in the Lambi main market are not much interested in talking about elections. Reason: They claim they are confused as to whom they should vote for this time.

“Equations have changed this year. Dasji (Gurdas Singh Badal) who used to work round the clock in this constituency on Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s behalf is now contesting against him,and the Congress is yet to announce its candidate, though Mahesh Inder Badal’s name is doing the rounds,” said Gursewak Singh,a resident of Lambi village. “For the first time,we are feeling confused as to whom we should vote for.”

Gurdev Singh and Kapoor Singh, residents of the same village who were initially reluctant to tell their names, said,“The CM had doled grants in crores in this VVIP constituency. But the poor have not been benefited much. The quality of toilets built for the poor is third grade. The actual benefits have been taken by the leaders only.”

Gurdev was quick to add,“The Chief Minister really needs to work hard in his constituency, because last time his winning margin was around 9,000 votes against the Congress’s Mahesh Inder Badal. This time, the CM’s own brother Gurdas Singh Badal is also fighting against him from the PPP. So he needs to do his homework well.”

Makhan Singh, press secretary of Class IV union of Lambi constituency, narrates his problems and questions the importance attached to the constituency. “If this is the VVIP constituency, then why travel dues of 11 employees including me have not been paid? They have been pending since 2007,” he said.

Sukhminder Singh Nambardar, however, thinks differently. He praises the government for its development projects, and says the third front will have no impact on the prospects of the ruling combine.

Ranjodh Singh concurs: “Funds came in for irrigation projects, tubewells, health and sanitation and much more for almost every village. So what else does a voter want? We are quite satisfied.”

Jasbir Kaur, another voter, said,“An under-construction new building of primary health centre,RO system for every village, good road network and many other facilities have been added by the CM. So what else do we want? But yes,of course, some confusion is prevailing among voters this time.”

Sadha Singh, former sarpanch of Lambi, points to the predicament the people are feeling generally. “Many people admire work of Dasji but they are confused because even the CM has given them enough funds.”

And if you ask the residents of this constituency which news channel they watch, the common answer is PTC. Sukhminder Kaur,a resident of this constituency, quickly asked this reporter,“When will this news come on PTC? We have no idea about any other channel.”
