While the process of learning is expected to evolve with the changing times,teachers in the government schools of Ludhiana are stuck with the archaic methods.
The Tu padh method is still used in most of the schools even after the teachers here are given Rs 500 each every year for preparing different teaching-learning materials (TLM) for bringing innovation in teaching.
It is sad that many teachers still do not know how to use the teaching-learning materials. I have come across many teachers during seminars and explained to them the difference between teaching-learning materials and teaching-learning aids, said Principal of Government Senior Secondary School Sherpur Kalan Varinder Sharma,who has also served as the District Education Officer (Elementary) Ludhiana.
Interestingly,most of the students in these schools are asked to read loudly the chapters discussed on the previous day. Teachers reportedly ask students to mark the answers to the questions of back exercises in the book itself.
Tarlok Bandhu,lecturer of Psychology at Malwa Central College of Education,said: The education system is heavily loaded with academic achievements. Teachers performance is also judged from their academic results. So while teaching,the teachers are primarily concerned with the academic results of students. They cater to only the cognitive aspects while the emotional,social and physical aspects take a back seat.
While the teachers at these government schools are all Bachelor of Education (B Ed) qualified,they rarely employ the methods acquired during their training while teaching the students.
A government school teacher said,We are already overstressed with so many non-educational works. It is not possible for us to discuss lessons with students as we are always in a hurry to complete the syllabus.
Varinder Sharma,who has also served as the District Science Supervisor Ludhiana,however,differed in his opinion.
All these are excuses. One can even develop a teaching aid within ten minutes. Teaching through a demonstrative way consumes less time,energy and money. The age old Tu Padh method helps only in 20 per cent learning, said Sharma while adding: There should be a speedy administrative check on such teachers. And the administrators should also be well versed with the new techniques of teaching.
Chief Parliamentary Secretary (Punjab) Harish Rai Dhanda,meanwhile,added,I am surprised to know that outdated way of teaching is used by many government schoolteachers. I have always dwelt upon the school infrastructure and other problems of schools and never really got the time to focus on this aspect. I will look into this personally and take action accordingly.
