On a tip-off by an NGO,the Health Department on Friday took samples from Milkmade ice-cream parlour in Sector 22 here.
We were aware that the shop, which has its manufacturing unit at the back, was carrying out misbranding. When we visited it this morning,we saw the adulterated contents that were being used. There was fungus in the freezer and even basic hygiene was lacking. We called the police and officials of the Health Department, who destroyed around 70 kg of ice cream, said Ram Bhatia, general secretary of the NGO,Anti-Corruption and Human Rights Association.
Bhatia said that one sample was collected from the shop which would be evaluated within 15 days to see if any non-edible substances were being used, and the shop would be sent a sealing notice by next week.
We visited the shop as we got a call from the NGO,which has been working with us for the last two months. They visit food manufacturing units and inform us if they notice anything amiss, said Satbir Singh, designated officer of Food Security Cell from the Department of Health.
The owner, however, claimed that hygiene was maintained and there had never been any complaint.
The shop has a small manufacturing unit at the back, where there are 10 employees working but there is no designated cleaner. They produce 200-300 litres of ice cream every day and claim to have 250 customers a day.
