Homecoming for Nepal president

It will be a homecoming of sorts for Nepal President Dr Ram Baran Yadav,an alumni of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,Chandigarh.

PGI alumnus will be chief guest at Institute’s February 4 convocation

It will be a homecoming of sorts for Nepal President Dr Ram Baran Yadav,an alumni of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research,(PGIMER),Chandigarh. The Nepal President will be the chief guest at the annual convocation of the institute scheduled to be held on February 4.

In 2009 Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was the chief guest at the PGI convocation and earlier the then External Affairs Minister,Pranab Mukherjee,was the chief guest.

Yadav,who is the first President of Nepal,had done his post-graduation in internal medicines from PGIMER in 1985 . His association with the Institute continued even after he completed his post-graduation as his son,Dr Chandra Mohan Yadav,and daughter-in-law too did their post-graduations from PGIMER.

Yadav has been in touch with his friends at PGIMER,who include Dr A Chakraborty of the Department of Microbiology and Dr N Khandelwal of the Department of Radiology. Those who know Yadav said that he was keen on studying medicine and got admission to Calcutta Medical College from where he received his MBBS degree and became a practicing doctor. Yadav soon became a well known doctor in Nepal and later became the private physician to late prime minister B P Koirala. Yadav has previously served as Nepal health minister and Nepali Congress general secretary.

PGIMER officials are gearing up for the 31st convocation of the Institute,which was born in 1962. Since its inception,PGI has been be served by several medical icons such as Dr Tulsi Das,Dr S S Anand,Dr P N Chuttani and Dr B K Aikat.
