Hit by bus,50-year-old cyclist dies

A 50-year-old Municipal Corporation employee was killed in an accident after his cycle was hit by a speeding bus belonging to the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking near the Sector-16/17 dividing road on Monday morning.

A 50-year-old Municipal Corporation employee was killed in an accident after his cycle was hit by a speeding bus belonging to the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking near the Sector-16/17 dividing road on Monday morning.

The bus driver,Malkit Singh,was arrested and a case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence was registered against him,a police officer said.

According to the officer,around 8.30 am,Ram Bhadur,who works as a baildaar,and his colleague Rajindran were on their way to the MC office in Sector 17 on their cycles. “When the two reached the Cricket Stadium Chowk in Sector 16,Bhadur’s cycle was hit by the CTU bus which was headed towards ISBT,Sector 17. The bus then rammed into the railing on the footpath before coming to a halt. Rajindran,who was standing behind Bhadur,escaped and immediately informed us,” the officer said.

The officer added,“Bhadur was profusely bleeding when we reached the spot. We rushed him to GMSH-16 where doctors declared him dead on arrival.”

However,the officer said the post-mortem report was awaited and the exact cause of death was not known.

In his complaint filed at the Sector-17 police station,Rajindran alleged the driver did not apply the brakes and even after hitting Bhadur,he did not stop the bus immediately.

Singh was arrested and a case was registered against him. During questioning,Singh said that he had seen Bhadur and had tried to apply the brakes but he was unable to do so and the bus rammed into Bhadur’s cycle,the officer said.
