The Himachal Pradesh government has decided to set up a high-level committee to explore possibilities of introducing standard universal cartons to match international packaging of apples.
Horticulture Minister Narinder Bragta, who held a meeting with MLAs,fruit growers associations, progressive farmers and other representatives from the apple-growing districts on Thursday, said the kind of packaging currently used in the state was not up to international standards.
The meeting, which was held in the wake of a letter written by Vidya Stokes,Congress Legislature Party leader and a leading apple grower of the state, also focussed on reworking strategies for marketing of apples.
Bragta said the committee would give its suggestions on using standard universal cartons to keep abreast of the ongoing competition in the international market where China,America and other European countries had already entered.
Stokes,in her letter to Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal last week, had said the telescopic cartons used currently suffered inherent drawbacks in the transportation of fruit.
