Ruling BJP has started taking Congress’s unity efforts seriously. It has finally realised that Congress is no longer Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal’s ‘loyal opposition’ and its position is weakening in the state as compared to the Congress. There is also a twist in the tale. Some astrologers have told Dhumal that his stars are strong, but former union minister Virbhadra Singh’s astrological position is set to change drastically after July 15. Despite Virbhadra suffering a blow from the court and his cabinet post in the Union government already gone, his political stars have been forecasted to improve. The BJP must set its house straight before Congress’s good news turns into BJP’s ominous gong.

Vidarbha or Virbhadra

The internet was rife with interesting comments on the day former Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh resigned from the union cabinet following framing of corruption charges by a Shimla court. An internet user tweeted: Actually the demand was to separate Vidarbha, but the UPA chairperson heard it wrong and told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to separate Virbhadra (Singh). Poor fellow has to go back home cutting short his term as a minister of the union. It’s only his loyalists who gave him a ‘king-size’ welcome from Kalka to Shimla on Sunday to demonstrate Raja sahib’s footing in the state – a journey to his ‘sixth Chief Ministerial’ dream.

Retired but not out

The list of retired bureaucrats has become too long to handle. Lucky are those who got post-retirement jobs from the BJP government. Last week,Saroj K Dash and T G Negi – two additional Chief secretary rank officers – retired from IAS service. And as expected,Chief Secretary S Roy assured the officers of a suitable post-retirement slot. However, the going was tough as Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal proceeded on tour and was not available to give his nod to the job requests. The fact is,Dhumal has the biodatas of more than a dozen officers – retired or close to retirement – who are seek ceremonial’ positions. The major worry, however,is that Dhumal’s current tenure is also ending and his own job is at stake if the people don’t ‘reward’ him for his work during the current tenure.

Sword fight

Former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh willingly displays a sword at a public or political function to dare his political detractors. Last month,MLA Mukesh Agnihotri and his loyalists presented to Virbhadra a sword at his 50th felicitation function at Shimla’s Ice-skating rink who aptly acknowledge the honour and displayed his combat skills by firmly holding the weapon in his hand. On Saturday it was the turn of PCC president Kaul Singh Thakur to match his estranged mentor. Not one but three swords were brought at the dais of PCC’s Mandi rally – one each held by Union minister for Commerce and Industry Anand Sharma,AICC general secretary Birender Singh and Thakur himself. The message was clear ‘Raja sahib,I am also a Chief Ministerial candidate as I am also armed with ‘sword’ power’.
