The Himachal Pradesh cabinet on Wednesday cleared a proposal to release revised house rent allowance for government employees — an announcement made by Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal at the meeting of the Joint Consultative Committee (JCC) of the employees last month.

The revised rates will be effective from March 1 and cover broadly eight categories of employees. The decision will put an additional financial burden of Rs 100 crore on the state exchequer. It is learnt that the state government has recently taken a loan to clear the arrears of the revised pays and release enhanced HRA.

Meanwhile, the cabinet meeting, presided over by the CM,also cleared the decks for the implementation of the Shetty Commission recommendations for subordinate employees of the judicial courts in regard to grant of higher allowances.

Moreover, undeterred by criticism regarding the largescale opening of private universities in the state, the cabinet accepted the compliance report of Gopi Bai Foundation Trust in Kota and Vocational Education Foundation in New Delhi which proposes to set up a private university called ‘Career Point University’ at Borainj in Hamirpur district. A bill to set up the university is expected to be introduced in the upcoming budget session of the Assembly next month.

The Cabinet also decided to finalise the procedure for sale of power, which Himachal Pradesh is receiving as its share of 7.19 per cent from Bhakra Beas Management Board hydro-power projects. Power will sold in the open market and is expected to generate an additional revenue of about Rs 72 crore.
