Favourable weather conditions is likely to see the wheat basket of country,Punjab,touching a record production of 167 lakh tones this year.

The state agriculture department on Thursday said that if the weather remains suitable in the coming days,wheat production could touch 167 lakh tonne against the maximum production of 164.72 lakh tonne in the last four decades.

Agriculture Director Mangal Singh Sandhu said during the current season,the area under the crop has gone up marginally to 35.15 lakh hectare as compared to 2010-11 when the area under cultivation was 35.10 lakh hectare.

“This Rabi season will also witness an increase in yield of more than 47 quintal per hectare,” he said.

Sandhu added that the crop was sown at the right time in November. Moreover,rains in mid-January and cool temperatures in February have been quite beneficial for the crop and will help increase its yield.

On yellow rust disease,he said it will affect wheat seeds DBW-17 and DH-711 in Kandi belt of Ropar,Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur districts.

The agriculture department has started initiatives to tackle the disease in such areas by suggesting to the farmers to ensure tilt,bumper shine spray,said Sandhu.

“The maximum area under wheat cultivation were of HD-2967,PBW-621 and PBW-550 types,which were more resistant to yellow rust disease,” he added.
