HC panel to tackle Sec 17 parking woes

In an attempt to find a solution to parking woes in Sector 17,the Punjab and Haryana High Court on Friday constituted a committee that will be headed by Finance Secretary,Chandigarh.

Other members of the committee will be the senior standing counsel for UT Administration,Sanjay Kaushal; senior lawyer Chetan Mittal; two amicus curiae,lawyers Reeta Kohli and A P S Shergill; Superintending Engineer (SE),Corporation Mukesh Anand; Superintendent of Police (SP) Traffic and a representative of Town and Planning department.

The UT Administration was yet again at the receiving end on Friday for having failed to come up with a solution for the parking problem in Sector 17. Slamming the Chandigarh Administration for trying to find “short term” measures,a division bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Ajay Tewari constituted the committee.

The directions were passed during the resumed hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) pertaining to traffic problems in Sector 17.

The Committee has been directed to submit a report and give suggestions to the competent authority.

The competent authority in turn will take an appropriate decision and inform the same to the High Court by June 15.
