With Panjab University elections on the anvil,the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) on Tuesday,in order to apprehend defacement of property in colleges and Panjab University,directed the Chandigarh Police to take strict action against any miscreants.
Also,in a meeting held recently the university authorities and principals of various colleges had decided to immediately inform the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP),Chandigarh and the District Magistrate about cases of defacement.
Ensuring students get adequate space to paste their posters for election campaign,the HC directed colleges to allocate space for the same.
The court was informed that many colleges had already done so. However,three colleges,Government College for Boys,Sector 11,SGGS Sector 26 and a college in Sector 42 were yet to earmark space for posters.
The directions were passed during the resumed hearing of a petition arising from a suo motu notice taken by the HC on the issue of defacement. The HC,in the last hearing,had issued warrants against nearly a dozen student leaders of Panjab University,who had then undertook not to deface the premises. During the resumed hearing,the HC also directed the municipal corporation to take action against those who defaced properties with reference to an incident on Monday when street vendors had dumped trash on clogged city roads .
