The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday issued notices to Punjab Transport Minister Mohan Lal and MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar on a PIL filed by Surinder Mittal — a resident of Model Town in Jalandhar.

The petitioner has sought an independent inquiry regarding an alleged recommendation made by Lal and Makkar to the concerned authorities asking them not to stop the trucks of people known to them.

Contending that the “misuse of power” by ministers and MLAs needs to be stopped,Mittal has filed the PIL on the basis of a news report published in an English daily on June 1,2008. The report stated that the trucks being operated by people known to BJP leaders were not being checked,as they carried letters issued by the transport minister and the local MLA stating that the trucks in question should not be checked.

The petitioner added that he had obtained two such letters, allegedly issued by Lal and Makkar.
