The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday gave the Punjab government one month to issue a notification for holding municipal elections in seven districts of the state.

The order was passed by a division bench headed by Justice

Hemant Gupta, which had vacated stay on holding civic body elections last week.

Last year, the high court had granted the stay in the seven districts after several petitions were filed challenging the polls. The petitioners had challenged a state government notification declaring municipal elections in Punjab saying that the elections were not in consonance with guidelines stipulated in the Constitution.

They had argued that according to Article 243 (T),reservation in every ward in a district has to be rotated on a yearly basis.

A petitioner had alleged that reservation was not conducted on a rotational basis in certain wards including one in Patiala.
