In what seems to be an indication that all is not well within the Congress, half of the councillors of the party skipped the foundation-laying function of a multilevel parking lot that was held Tuesday. While everyone cited different reasons for not being present, some rued that local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal, who was not present on the occasion, was allegedly ignored. Others stated that people who had worked for the success of the project were not being given due credit.
Among those who were present was area councillor Pardeep Chhabra, councillors H C Kalyan,Sheela Phool Singh,Gurbax Rawat and Poonam Sharma. Those conspicuous by their absence were senior deputy Mayor Rana Kashmiri Devi,Deputy Mayor Satish Kainth and councillors Mukesh Bassi,Sat Prakash Aggarwal,Darshan Garg and Raj Bala Malik.
A Congress leader said the foundation stone-laying should have been done by MP Pawan Kumar Bansal. He said that instead of Bansal being called for inauguration of an overbridge, which was a smaller project,he should have been invited for this function. Another rued that Bansals name was missing from the invitation card.
Nominated councillor Surinder Bahga, who did not attend the function, complained that people who worked for ensuring the project took off have not been given due credit. Last year,Bahga had held several meetings with the Architecture department for getting clearances for the project. Former Mayor Raj Bala Malik reportedly did not attend the function for similar reasons.
Mayor Subhash Chawla said that invitation was sent to everyone and he was not aware why they did not attend the function as no one had approached him with any reasons. On being asked about Bansal not being present at the event,Chawla had earlier clarified that he would be inaugurating an overbridge and that his consent had been sought for the same.
In the case of BJP-SAD councilors, out of 10 only two Satinder Singh and Malkit Singh were present. While the women councillors of BJP-SAD have gone on a tour of Gujarat, the others cited different reasons.
It was the presence of senior BJP leader Satya Pal Jain that came as a surprise
to many present there.
Leader of the Opposition in the MC House Arun Sood said,The party did not boycott the event, though we do have some reservations about the project. It was approved without any discussion in the House. The existing surface parking lot has a capacity for 630 cars. For accommodating 270 additional cars,Rs 50 crore is being spent. This is not justified.
However, with Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil being the chief guest, officials of the Administration including Adviser K K Sharma,Home Secretary Anil Kumar,Finance Secretary V K Singh,Municipal Commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh,IG R P Upadhayaya and Chief Architect Sumit Kaur among others were present.
