Shop-owners at the Grain Market in Sector 26 are complaining about a host of problems that they face due to bad roads and unsanitary conditions in the market. Citing a confusion regarding the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation and the Market Committee, the shop-owners claim that both the authorities are negligent towards the maintenance of the market.

While potholes and cracked roads make it extremely difficult for shopowners to manage the bio-degradable waste clogging the roads, heavy rains worsen the situation.

“We have been demanding a re-carpeting of all the roads in the Grain Market for many months now but the Market Committee keeps on dilly-dallying. The roads have not been repaired for the last three years and we are still waiting for the authorities to fulfill their promises,” rued one of the shop-owners in the Grain Market.

Lack of sanitation in the area is another major problem that the shop-owners are facing. The area lacks a well-maintained public toilet, and the only convenience is out in the open and workers are forced to use it. Elaborating on this,Ram Karan Gupta, president of the Karyana Association said,“Due to lack of a proper public convenience, the shop-owners have to use the conveniences in the Satsang Bhawan which is a distant place. Moreover, our workers are forced to use the only convenience available that is out in the open. We had requested the authorities to provide us a hygienic public convenience but all in vain.”

The shop-owners further said that there was a lot of confusion regarding the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation and the Market Committee over the Grain Market.

“It seems that the Grain Market is nobody’s child. Many times,we complain about a particular problem to the Market Committee only to hear that it does not fall under their jurisdiction while the Corporation says that it is the Committee’s responsibility. Since the problems remain unaddressed,it is we who have to suffer,” complained Ram Karan further.

When asked to comment on the problems faced by the shop-owners,Dinesh Mahajan, chairman of the Market Commmittee said,“The Marketing Board has cleared the fund for the re-carpetting of the roads and the work will start very soon. As far as sanitation is concerned,we have appointed sweepers for the same”.
